Choosing the right vineyard trellis system is crucial for the health of your vineyard and the quality of the wine it produces. In modern viticulture, different grapevine training systems are adopted based on climate, grape variety, terrain, and production goals.
Each training method offers specific advantages in terms of exposure to sunlight, air circulation, and ease of vineyard management. From classic vertical shoot positioning (VSP) systems like Guyot, widely used on hilly terrains, to expansive tendone or pergola systems for warm or humid climates, every approach reflects centuries of local knowledge and innovation.
Guyot training system. The most common vertical shoot positioning system
The Guyot system is one of the most widespread training methods in Europe, especially for quality wine production. It supports balanced vine growth and consistent yields, making it ideal for sloped terrains and manual vineyard work.
Double inverted Guyot
This variation combines the productivity of the double cane system with the downward positioning of fruiting arms, enhancing sunlight exposure and uniform ripening.
Simple inverted Guyot
In this version, a single fruiting cane is trained downward. It’s used to improve light distribution and canopy management.
Double Guyot trellis
Two fruiting canes are retained on opposite sides of the trunk. This setup increases potential yield while maintaining control over vine vigor.

Sylvoz vineyard trellis system
The Sylvoz system is ideal for cool, fertile soils and is distinguished by a permanent horizontal cordon positioned on the second wire. Fruiting canes, each carrying 8 to 12 buds, are arched and tied to a lower wire. Zinc-coated vineyard posts measuring between 2 and 2.5 meters in height support a structure with 5 to 6 wires. Recommended post spacing includes 6 meters within the row and 3 to 4 meters between rows. This system allows for efficient canopy management and is well-suited for mechanical pruning and harvesting.
Casarsa vineyard trellis system
The Casarsa system is derived from the Sylvoz model and features a high trunk, typically between 1.5 and 1.8 meters, that extends horizontally with short fruiting canes allowed to arch downward naturally. Designed to facilitate mechanized pruning and harvesting, it works well in medium-fertility soils. The structure uses galvanized steel vineyard posts of about 2.5 meters and row spacing of 6 to 8 meters.
